I'll go first!

Intro

Hey my name is Zac! 2 years ago I moved to San Francisco. I had zero friends and zero connections. So I decided to start hosting small gatherings in the city. I've made a ton of friends along the way. I spend a lot of my time thinking about why it's so hard for us to make friends as adults, and how to bring communities of people together. (You might have noticed if you're a frequent reader of this newsletter lol)

Ask

The hardest part about hosting events is finding unique venues to work with, that aren't trying to charge an arm and a leg. I've been looking for longterm partners in San Francisco with a unique space to host events for 100+ startup founders and investors.

Offer

I've gotten extremely good at writing sales copy. If you want to help sell an idea to investors, pitch a product to customers, or write more compelling email offers, I can definitely help you with that.

Hey Zac, thanks for hosting the IRL event last night - didn't get a chance to talk to you as I came late but loved the energy from everyone there, it's what makes SF so great for optimists <3

Ying! Thank you so much for coming. Yeah last night was great. Met some really interesting people.

It always blows my mind how kind people are at these events, and how willing they are to teach, and share their knowledge.

I've hosted events at a bunch of different spaces around SF. Might be able to help here. Shoot me an email with your budget range, event size range, and any other important details (event price, frequency, day of week, etc.) and I'll do my best to connect you with some good spaces.

Intro

I’m Brad, I moved back to the Bay Area (I grew up here) after a mid-career PhD in ML/Human genomics at Cornell University. While I have started a company in embryonic genomics, I have found the startup ecosystem dominated by Stanford and I have (nearly) zero contacts there. I am really looking for a community of scientific / deeptech startup founders that does not require a local university affiliation. Reaching out as a creative & technical adult is tough ask, so I am asking here. Thanks to Zac for starting this up!

ASK

Generally? Seeking mutually supportive community. Specifically? Seeking fertility clinic physicians (reproductive endocrinologists), sequencing / embryology lab managers, AND genetic councilors interested in embryonic genomics as early partners. Especially interested in non-traditional families who may need to use IVF. Also seeking connections with Angel investors interested in profitably partnering to accelerating our development!

OFFERING

To this group, scientific, software engineering, and IP discussions about startups. Some guidance on running small businesses. To the world - the opportunity to improve the healthy lifespan of your children without weak relative risk or questionable genetic intervention! Non-invasive, software-only, demographically sensitive, worldwide. Solidly based, not science-fiction.

This is a lovely space Zac - thank you!

Intro

My name is Michael, from Nigeria. When I moved to the US years ago, I realized how difficult it could be to exchange local currency elsewhere for US Dollars. In my case, I lost half the value of my savings due to exchange rate volatility, which messed up my year at grad school at Stanford. Good things come from impactful experiences. Now I'm building out GradientFI [https://gradientfi.com], a web3-based payments and forex liquidity platform for DeFi, e-commerce and fintech platforms.

Ask

Need to intro to early investors and angels who are interested in real-world use case for web3. Need to hire early team members who want to join the ride as well. If you are building a fintech, and would need cross-currency liquidity at any point, talk to us.

Offer

Spent years in management consulting working with banks and fortune500 companies, so generally very good with product / corporate strategy, reviewing pitch decks and writing sales copies. Always happy to chat over zoom or IRL in SF bay: calendly.com/meet-omichael

Hello,

My name is Habeeb, and I come from a small town in Nigeria. Unlike most of my peers, I became interested in technology at a very young age. In high school, I had more friends online, many of whom were based in the US, than I did in real life. Through these friendships, I learned a great deal and have been fortunate enough to join communities and engage in years of studying and research, leading to a significant mindset shift from the typical community in which I live.

Following high school, I took two gap years to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to find a career path where I could make the most significant impact on the world. I aspire to be a genetic engineer or a molecular/computational biologist because I believe I can make a mark on the world through this path.

Recently, I befriended the co-founder of Rizzai, the world's most powerful text AI keyboard. I shared my goals and aspirations with him, including my desire to attend UC Berkeley, and he advised me to move to San Francisco. Even before meeting him, I knew that California was a place where I could meet like-minded people and work on exciting projects.

I am desperately seeking any opportunity that could provide me with the learning opportunities I crave and the environment to grow and realise my full potential. It could be a scholarship, or even a small internship in California, or any person, company, or organization working on something promising.

I might not fully understand how serendipity works, but as Zac Solomon says, I hope that someone out there will go out of their way to help me and possibly move mountains. While stuck here in Nigeria, I am learning a lot about artificial intelligence and quantum computing and how they can be applied to computational biology.

Kindly reach out to me at

Thank you.

Habeebb!

Thanks for joining us. Let's try and get even more specific, so that people can help you!

What might help is by sharing what skills you currently have now. What's something you think your particularly good at, or something you've accomplished that you're proud of. Give us just one very specific way you can help the people in this community!

Then ask for exactly what you want. Just one single, super specific ask. What's one thing that someone could do for you.

Are you looking to go to school--What school?

Are you looking for work--What kind of work?

You want to work at a promising company--What industry?

The key is specificity. It might sound like it's limiting your options, but the reality is this is the best way to find unlikely connections!

Expand full comment
Habeebb's avatar

Thank you for the suggestion to be more specific. I am familiar with several programming languages, including Python and Javascript, and I am currently learning web development. My main request is help with going to school. I want to study computational biology and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. Getting a good education is crucial to my future aspirations, so any help with scholarships or information about internships or programs related to my desired field of study would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I'm Zach Co-founder of tryintrepid.com A bank alternative for digital entrepreneurs and global remote teams. Like Zac (our host) I have hosted high vibe, high value content driven events across Southeast Asia. I split my time between the US (Florida and SF) and SE Asia.

Ask- More access to super cool digital native entrepreneurs. We are low ego and most of our customers are just good solid people building things that matter.

Give: I've spent the vast majority of my career building teams and companies through the lens of hiring and org culture. I've done this a founder, investor and as a tech recruiter. I/we have a vast network of engineers, designers, devs and cool people all around the world. These are both FL and Agencies. I am happy to share my expertise. My calendly is here: https://calendly.com/zpiester/catch-up-with-zach

Zac- if you ever want to come to SE Asia and collab on events, we got you!

Cool concept. Excited to help others.

Intro

Skiing. Basketball. Tennis. Pickle ball. Fitness. That's how I spend the majority of my free time. Somehow that led to me founding a sports tech startup, Pharos Fitness, who would've guessed?

I moved to SF 9 months ago. I knew 0 people, didn't have a job or an income. I went to events every night and took every odd opportunity that came my way. Now I have a deep network and 2 startups.

I'm the co-host of Money Is Funny -- a unique networking event where early-stage founders pitch their startups to a panel of VCs and comedians and get roasted in front of a live audience.

Ask

Warm intros to pre-seed/seed stage VCs and angels specifically interested in fitness, health and AI.

Offer

- Aspiring entrepreneurs or anyone entering the sports industry:

I'll hop on a 20 minute call. Ask me anything. I've worked in sports for 5 years. I've worked on 3 different startups doing B2B SaaS, B2C AI tech, and live events. I've done a lot of mentorship and love helping people early in their careers.

- Founders:

This may sound corny but I'm an incredible listener. Especially for smart, driven people. If you need to problem solve, I'll hop on a call and do my best to guide you there.

Have you made it out to one of my events yet? Lots of investors came by last night. I'm not sure if any of them had a fitness bent, but certainly health. On May 10th, I'm hosting a biotech and health tech event. So almost certainly your type of people will be there.

Thanks for setting this up Zac!

Intro

My name is Eric, and I moved to SF from the east coast 2 years ago. A big tech job brought me here, but I've since joined the startup world. I joined as the 2nd engineer of a healthcare fintech company last year, but things didn't go the way we expected and I'm excited to be joining Candid Health, an early-stage startup that offers medical billing as a service! Outside of work I enjoy climbing, skiing, and cooking, and I'm looking to adopt a cat soon.

Ask

Right now, one of my top goals is to get more plugged-in to the healthtech space(less so biotech/life sciences). Happy to connect on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/xiexieeric/) and chat more! I'm still relatively young in my software career and would love to access mentorship both technically and professionally. Examples of what I'd be excited about are 1:1 mentorship or a high-quality community of hobby programmers on Discord/Slack.

Offer

While I'm looking for a mentor, I'm also happy to be a mentor myself. Anyone who is ambitious about a career in software engineering, or has questions about the startup world, feel free to leave a comment! In my latest role I've also gained a bit of expertise in integrating with card program managers like Marqeta/Lithic, and would be happy to provide some advice there.

Eric, I love this.

Some sage advice I once heard was that, you should always have three people in your life.

1. Someone years beyond you. Someone you can learn from, who has seen and done everything on your path. A member of the previous generation.

2. The next is a rival, or someone exactly on your level. You're both in the trenches, going through the same problems together. You don't need to be enemies, but they're your counterpoint.

3. And finally, you should have someone behind you. Someone you can teach your hard earned lessons to. The next generation.

It sounds like that's exactly what you're thinking already.

Ask

Intro

Dear all,

Great to meet you here! My name is Natalia. After finishing my PhD contract in Computational Neuroscience back in the Netherlands in the fall of 2017, I felt like a misfit in the job market. Where do I go and why is it so hard to find the right tribe that understands me and appreciates me for my knowledge and mentality?

That's when I took a decision to solve this problem for other people. I started studying the mechanics of the job market like a maniac. In the process, I wrote 3 books, developed a massive training program, and aptitude tests that answer questions that have never been approached in a systematic way before. Now, in times of AI, career advisory is even more challenging and exciting than ever before! And so I took the challenge on my quest to become the best career advisor of all time ;) That's why I found myself here in San Francisco - in the very epicenter of AI tech.

Ask

To effectively build stable life and develop my company here as a bootstrapping solopreneur, I need to leverage the company revenue, and that will require some tweaks to my business model. Therefore, I am still looking for product-market-fit for my services in the San Francisco / Bay Area, and I'm currently focused on learning the mechanics of VC/recruiting market. Any suggestions, ideas, contacts, or cautionary tales are welcome!

Offer

Strategizing is the hardest part of the career development process! I've built skills in strategizing careers on each career stage and I can help you with that. Applying for and landing actual jobs is much simpler and more algorythmic, and I can show you all the tricks you need to know as well.

Hi guys!

🐎Intro-

I'm Jen Tankel, new to SF and the cofounder of an equestrian technology company called Pegasus (www.thepegasus.app).

In the next few weeks, we'll be releasing our event management system which is a modern SaaS platform that enables any equestrian event to be hosted and managed on our platform (think tan breeches and horse jumps all the way to Yellowstone cowboy stuff). I also write about the $185b global equestrian industry at www.theoxer.com.

🐎Ask-

We're currently raising our pre-seed round and are looking for investors! Our company is very niche and focused - we're taking an industry that currently runs on pen, paper, and checkbooks and modernizing it.

🐎Offer-

In addition to providing intel on anything horse and startup-experience related, I'm happy to help with B2G sales and the municipal procurement process. I use to work for a global parking payment app company where we mostly sold to government. You can also reach me at jen@thepegasus.app.

Cheers!

Would love to grab coffee sometime and learn more about your story and how you got into this business!
